Sam Houston was born in Virginia in 1793. He lived in a house of 11 including himself. Since he had nothing else to do, he read a lot. When he wasn’t reading, he was whittling wood. Sam learned how to speak, eat and hunt like a Cherokee Indian. Learning these skills became important because later he fought Indians in Andrew Jackson’s army. In the war of 1812, Houston fought in Andrew Jackson’s army and got badly injured. He got shot in the arm twice and the shoulder once. People left Houston on the ground because they thought he would die. He lived and eventually became a congressman. Houston disagreed with some decisions of what Henry Clay wanted for the office. He had a duel with Henry Clay and killed Clay. Houston fought for Texas to be separated from Mexico and won. In 1836, Sam was elected president of Texas by a landslide. Sam Houston got to decide what the capital of Texas was and he chose his own last name; Houston. Sam Houston died in 1863.
